Teaching DBT skills to university-aged clients

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed for individuals with strong behavioral urges and its techniques have proven effective for anyone who can benefit from improved mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. The treatment includes participating in both individual therapy and a skills group.

DBT-U skills group is specifically designed to work around young adults (ages 18 to late 20s) academic needs while also providing the full DBT curriculum. DBT is proven to be extremely helpful in young adults and students who experience intense emotions, have poor coping skills, frequent mood swings, trouble focusing on classwork or work due to emotional distress, depression, anxiety, self injurious and suicidal behavior as well as anger outbursts, eating disorder behavior and impulsive and distributive behaviors.  Through DBT-U young adults are better able to understand, manage and regulate emotions, tolerate distress without making the problems bigger, maintain satisfying relationships with others, effectively communicate their needs, increase self awareness and hold alternative points of views as well increase problem solving skills.

The first step is to contact the group facilitator to schedule an intake to see if the group is a good fit. To participate in weekly DBT-U skills group, individual therapy is required. If you are in need of a therapist, at the intake the group facilitator will provide you with individual therapist referrals.

If you are a young adult and interested in learning skills to improve emotional well being and have not engaged in self-harm or suicide ideation in one year, consider the Whole Skills Coaching class. Individual therapy is not required to participate in this class.
